It's been a while, and not a lot of progress. I got the pickup routes done. I cut a template on the CNC, positioned it and routed out the cavities. The bright birdseye maple is way too stark. I recently made a dining room table which I covered in "table top" epoxy. One of the parts is about...

I did the inlay, the epoxy is not curing, ugh. I'll give it another day, but removing that is going to be painful. I'm not going to think about that right now. I cut all my frets and cut the tangs off the ends. I didn't like how the magnets were aligned with the strings with my pickup...

I'm as anit-AI as anyone when it comes to creative endeavors. I like what I heard the other day: respect demands effort. AI is a lazy way to accomplish anything creative, not to mention the "stealing" aspect of AI learning. That said, boy is it good at doing mock ups. We are installing a new...

I'm going to say something nice about mahogany: a card scraper works amazingly well on it. I did a lot of scraping of the body last night, it looks really nice. I'm digging the flow of the curves. Still more to do, but good progress there, apparently I didn't take any pics after that session...

The guy who I'm building this bass for (me) keeps changing the requirements. I'll have a stern talk with him.

The best part about doing this plug with the CNC (that I didn't initially think of) is that if I mess it up I can cut a new one in 5 minutes. When I've done stuff like this in the past manually with control covers, wrecking the cover means starting all over again, that's a bummer. That said...

I love it when a plan comes together. The routing was not difficult at all, I took a lot of care to make sure it was all secure. It's such a perfect fit, probably a bit too tight by the time I get finish on everything and it should be removable. I have to plan out my drilling.

I don't like how soft mahogany is for holding the output jack and accessing the inside to make room would be tough. A tight control cavity is one of my calling cards, but it's never fun. I came up with solution using a wenge block as a holder. I'll make the wenge conform to the body contour, but...

Sometimes I amaze myself. I guess this is going to be a regular double P like the BC Rich. I can't see running these pickup holders again. Why didn't I notice that when gluing them up? no answer.

As expected this has been moving kind of slow and I guess I didn't take pics of everything I did. I drilled out the headstock. I made a template using the CNC. I don't use the CNC to cut any of this out, I just to cut a template I can use for drilling. I can program in the diameter of the...

We're in this heat wave right now, it was 97F (36C) and humid outside. I spent the afternoon in the shop. I haven't done that in years, it felt so good, my new shop has big windows, so it doesn't feel as dungeon-y as my last one did. I got a lot of body carving done, still some refinement to be...

As expected this is moving rather slowly, lots of stuff vying for my “free” time. Including digging a hole for a buried propane tank to support a whole house generator. I started carving the body, the plan is to have a carved top. I’m using Iwasaki, Shinto and farrier’s files. Given how soft...

I routed the neck pocket, all went well. I guess it's early in the process for this, but the body will be heavily carved and I want to know where my "no go" zones are. I didn't take pics, but I used double stick tape and fastened the PVC boards right up against the neck while it was on top of...

If I said this neck was going well I'd be lying. Despite doing lots of woodworking over the last couple years (including: trimming out a 6' round window, making a 10'x3' dining table and 1,000 other small projects) I feel like I need to regain the focus on precision. I bought the padauk I'm...

I ran the fretboard, it came out good. After cutting it out (in retrospect it would not have been hard to have the machine cut it out!), I sanded the tool marks out of the fretboard in a couple minutes with a sanding block. The finish was pretty good, but did have some tooling lines in it.
