Andrew-- I checked inside the bass more thoroughly, and there are three spots where labels were scratched off rather crudely, leaving fragments (in German, but mostly unreadable). The two existing labels read 'Made in Germany', and 'C. Meisel, Fine Violins, Not Genuine Without This Label, Made...

Thanks! What would an appraisal cost anyway? Maybe I don't really need a full appraisal, just a general opinion. Do any luthiers make house calls? ;)

Any suggestions from anyone re shops? Not sure how much money I want to put into it at this point though. Also I'm not sure if I can get it into my Honda CRV. Would any shops give an opinion/appraisal via email?

The label in mine has the maker and serial number and says 'Made in West Germany' but doesn't give the date for some reason. Just checked again and there is a fragmented label in German to the right of the other label--maybe the date was on that.

So is the whole thing laminated or just the top? Couldn't tell you how it sounds--my mom was the bass player and she died in 1971. It's possible it was played a few times after that by friends of my dad, but for the most part it just sat. I'm assuming it would need new strings at this point.
