    Precision Elite II going passive

I feel foolish now. Cadfael, I apologize. My ignorance got the better of me and I didn't read your posts as carefully as I could have.

    Precision Elite II going passive

I see now. I guess I just didn't understand how the wiring in the Elite II truly worked. If those switches will still fiction normally even with the preamp removed (thus requiring no battery), then maybe I will put them back in. At this point the new pickups are in place so I'll have to live...

    Precision Elite II going passive

I have the 2 pickup model. I understand what you're saying, but the issue isn't simply that the preamp is bad (it makes a high pitched squeal, which seems to indicate that components are failing). The other problem is the bridge pickup, which just sounds bad--very thin and noisy. It looks like...

    Precision Elite II going passive

Call it being bold. The preamp wasn't the only problem. The bridge pickup is also sounding terrible. Talking to the technician, we pretty much worked out that for what I'm looking for in an instrument, going passive would be a good path. I realize some will not approve of this given the...

    Precision Elite II going passive

The electronics in my Elite II started giving out--particularly the preamp--so I made the decision to convert it to passive. So far I'm having a couple of SD Quarter Pounds put in and the controls will be converted to V/V/T. The problem (well, not really a problem--more of an...

Bass teacher in or near Southern New Hampshire

Hi all, I'm looking for a good bass teacher close to home. Any recommendations in this area? Studied a lot of classical and jazz in college and the lessons were pretty intensive. That was some time ago and I've let a lot of things slide. I'm looking to get back there and beyond. Any...

    Dress up my MIM Jazz!

That looks great. This is more or less the direction I'm going. Regarding the control plate: any tips for drilling the new holes and getting things lined up properly? That area of the current guard has extra holes and only one lines up with the new plate.

    Dress up my MIM Jazz!

Gotcha. Okay, so I'm just going to have to pay extra attention to the pickup dimensions when ordering.

    Dress up my MIM Jazz!

Control plate and chrome knobs are ordered. Next step is choosing pickups and ordering a tort guard (a bunch of you echoed my initial sentiment--I love the idea, as well). I think I'm okay to order standard neck & bridge pickup sizes, right? If I'm replacing with a standard guard, that would...

    Dress up my MIM Jazz!

For this bass I want to keep it (or get it to--who am I kidding?) a classic Jazz bass sound. As warm and mellow as possible. I may even string it with flats, but will have to see. I don't want it to sound too dead. Just nice and round.

    Dress up my MIM Jazz!

Just measured the pickups. They're both *just* shy of 3 5/8"-- like, shy by maybe 1/32"

I hear ya, but new paint is outside my skill level. I'm gonna have to make the best of it.

Will do. I'll take some measurements tonight (after work) and post up the results. Thanks for the suggestions!

    Dress up my MIM Jazz!

I probably won't do covers but at least want a new guard, knobs and electronics.
