I learned piano in high school (68-72) from a guy who started with theory and applied it to fake book kind of playing. Learned to read a little but mostly learned how to read melodies and chords and make them sound like music.

I realized I was going in the Navy and so made the switch to guitar (rhythm) because hauling an "electric" piano was a non-starter.

In 1986 I had a motorcycle accident and shattered my fretting arm and so ended my musical "career" such as it was. It was always just about loving music and wanting to play some. With my arm mangled and pronation / supination nonexistent, playing anything that wasn't oriented vertical to the floor was out.

Long story short, I was in a music store and heard a guy playing the ubase. Realizing that I could play that sitting, upright on my knee I bought one. While I still play it, intonation is not adjustable and my particular instrument is pretty bad. But that got me started playing bass.

I then went looking for "short scale basses" which is a pretty wide open term. I bought an Ibanez 4 string which is a wonderful guitar but is difficult for me to play. I then ran across the Mikro, went with a 5 string and absolutely LOVE it. It is my main bass now.

I also ran across ScottsBassLessons.com and joined. I am not affiliated in any way (other than paying up and using it) but can't say enough good things about the guy and his school. For someone really just getting started it has been an amazing tool.

Two years in I am still "just learning" but I know now that I will be "just learning for many years. The bass is an amazing instrument, so much to learn, so little time.
