I have never played a 5 string....I am curious though...I have always played Fender Precisions and Jazz Basses. I admire the work of David Pegg with Jethro Tull. He uses or has used a 5 string Ibanez. What is the usual tuning of a 5 or even 6?

Mine had a date stamped on the butt end of the neck. I do not remember the exact date but it was Oct. 1959...in any event. The pocket for the neck had some markings in it too...but I can't remember just what they were ….I think it was pencil marked and probably a production number.

On a vintage Neck there should be a date stamp showing when it was made. Personally I don't care about a not so accurate finish ….as long as everything else is correct. You can always refinish or have it refinished. I believe Fender Custom Shop will refinish according to specs used in 59. As I...

The pro's and cons of quarter sawn and flat sawn are that necks made from quarter sawn wood are stiffer which can be a plus and a minus. Truss rod adjustment can be a bit more difficult with QS necks where as Flat sawn are easier to adjust. Conversely one may warp quicker than the other ….flat...
