Double Bass What is the learning curve like as a new upright bassist?

I also forgot to mention that it will take your electric bass playing to another level; both from pedagogy and technique.

Double Bass What is the learning curve like as a new upright bassist?

I don’t know your age or weight but with my first experience, I wasn’t quite prepared for finding out muscle groups, joints and ligaments I didn’t know I had. I agree with all of the others recommendations but also be prepared to experience muscle pain in your left and right hands, back and...

Double Bass I know this sounds crazy

For a better tone and response from the instrument. I know EUB is its own thing, but as it used to be my main rehearsal/sometimes gig bass, I wanted more thump and upright feel from it. Now I have a Kolstein Busetto bass and it’s replaced my EUB in every way, unless they call me for a gig...

    Double Bass Preferred Strings

I have Helicore Orchestrals on my E and A and Spircore Weichs for the D and G. Both bow well, (Probably better than I do), but also it depends on what EUB you’re using. @logdrum puts it well to really stick with a string combo for at least a year to understand how your EUB behaves.

Double Bass I know this sounds crazy

Makes sense. It is essentially set up like an electric bass but in Ibanez fashion of no real bridge. I used to use a wrap for my 6 string basses when I was learning the ropes of how to use them without overlap sustain. I use a bridge wing pick up on my Messenger EUB mixed with the internal...

Double Bass Ischell v Ehrlund Contact Mic

I have an Ischell and I assumed you snake a ribbon around it, if only to eliminate a lot of feedback from having it open on the sides. I have a Shen hybrid it works fantastic on; probably because it doesn’t resonate as well as my Kolstein Busetto travel does. A few days ago I actually got it on...

Double Bass Health Related Issues To Playing

This happened to me on a gig recently. For me, it’s arthritis in my neck and shoulder. It pinches the nerves up there and pulls up on the muscles in the forearm muscle. This makes my index and middle finger freeze up, kind of like a seizure, but not quite. Not really painful, just awkward. I had...

Double Bass String indentification : John Patitucci at Emmet's "Modern Jazz Masters"

The other question you may want to ask yourself, is how much money do you have to spend on strings? And after you spend all that money, will your bass still sound like his? Just thinking out loud; strings are always a wild card as every bass sounds different with different strings. And so it...

    Double Bass Volume, Volume, Volume!

Well first, fire the drummer. They’re probably making everyone get louder to keep up. But seriously, are your mids turned up? Mids always help you cut thru the mix even if it sounds a bit thin, mids and highs are really important to get thru. Otherwise, I stand by my first statement…...

Double Bass Cello as a Mini-Bass / Cello in 4ths

Just to add a little more fuel to this fire, some of us like to compose and play improvisationally, and I think the cello can really enhance that opportunity, especially when it comes to being a bass or holding down a low rhythm. Because it has a different timbre, I believe it can really enhance...

Double Bass Pizz at end of fingerboard?

I play a few inches from the end as it’s just more comfortable there; no matter the string choice. My thought is if you’re playing strictly acoustically, maybe there is a difference in sound production, but plugged in to an amp and it doesn’t seem to have much of difference one way or the other...

Double Bass Cello as a Mini-Bass / Cello in 4ths

Using the cello as a bass is kinda cool. Plucked like a jazz upright bass, you can get good sound from it. I use a KNA DB-1 bridge wing pickup. It has plenty of low end on the G and C and soloing using fifths is way cool. I had bought the KNA for my bass, but it was awful on that. Then I slipped...

Double Bass Different basses for different drummers?

My groups are pretty regular so I don’t swap out for that reason. Usually it’s due more to the setlist and what I think I hear and I want it to sound like or the vibe of the song.
