I am one of those people who stays in solo tuning almost exclusively. Recently, I've been playing in solo tuning with a drop E or D, as @MikeCanada mentioned. The only time I'm not in solo tuning is when I'm playing in an orchestra, and I usually just change to orchestra strings for those gigs...

You're right, it has gotten loads better over the years. The stories my mom and older female friends have told me make me so angry, but also grateful that I have not had to deal with the level of harassment, not to mention sexism, some people have.
