Yeah I was pretty suspicious of the noise it made but just the fact that it wasn't typical of what I'd heard about microphonic tubes made me a bit dubious about that being the cause. I'll replace the tube and see how that goes. Thanks for the help folks, it's much appreciated!

I've tried this method and with a firm tap the tube does crackle and pop a bit but it doesn't have the ring I've heard is common with a microphonic tube. It isn't a feedback issue either, even with strings muted the squealing continues.
