Rupert Neeve RNDI vs Radial JDI

When comparing the RNDI, be sure you know the input impedance of the other DI or preamp you're comparing it to. The RNDI uses the "golden standard" of Hi-Z input impedance value for guitars and basses of 1Mohm. Yes, the RNDI does indeed sound great and I run mine through my Golden Age Pre-73...

Ampeg cabs grill cloth is distorting the sound

Sure. And the heat gun setting I arrived at felt no hotter than a hair dryer set to high. I could hold my hand a few inches away no problem. So again, use common sense, start low and go up gradually or use a hair dryer. I'm just here to report that the method suggested originally in the 1967...

Ampeg cabs grill cloth is distorting the sound

Agreed and I should've been more explicit. Indeed because others had warned about this, I started off very carefully at the lowest possible setting and at farther distances - up to 6" - and gradually increasing heat and moving closer until I started seeing some results. My settings above are...

Ampeg cabs grill cloth is distorting the sound

Had this exact issue with a 67 Ampeg SB-12 (black tolex/gold trim). Super loose grill cloth. Heat gun set to low/medium worked like a charm in just a few minutes. Tightened the whole thing up like new. Turns out it's also the suggested method on the SB-12's original manual from 1967. The...

    Official Ampeg Portaflex Club

This is great to hear. Thanks for chiming in. I finally stumbled on some decent demo vids on Instagram by using a hashtag search for #ampegpf20t and there's some excellent clips. Somehow YouTube came short for this amp

Excellent points. I'm now indeed inclined to stick with the modern cab I ordered and try it out -- as AMPEG intended -- with the pf20-t and if I want a SB12 I'll get the full combo as AMPEG also intended...

Hope I'm doing this right and not interrupting a convo...I had started a new thread but someone suggested posting here. I'm building a small project home studio and have so far acquired a newer Ampeg PF112HE cab. Now looking at a vintage SB12 head (there's a few out there without cabs) or a...

Vintage AMPEG SB-12 vs new PF20-T?

haha. I hear all that. longer story...i'm namely a guitarist and became a handwired/tube amp junkie after a bad experience bringing a PCB tube amp to a NYC tech many years ago. They were so reluctant to open it up and deal with it that it took 6 months of nagging to get it back. i...

Vintage AMPEG SB-12 vs new PF20-T?

Appreciate all the super helpful the feedback so far! The pf20-t def has its modern advantages and might be the obvious choice. Should say I do own a Ironman attenuator so the load box/DI line out can be achieved with the SB12. I'd still be interested to hear if anyone has compared the two...

Vintage AMPEG SB-12 vs new PF20-T?

Hello. My first post here .. I'm building a small project home studio and have acquired a new Ampeg PF112HE cab. Now looking at a vintage SB12 head (there's a few out there) or a newer PF20T. Somewhat surprisingly, I'm having a hard time finding any comparison between these two. Anyone had a...
