it's a college level full orchestra, so i don't really have to worry about playing ability of the orchestra. I have a few recordings of each, so I'll take a look again to see how involved the orchestra would be to keep them from getting bored. Thanks.

Every year at my school there is a concerto competition, but I'm torn between two. I either want to do Bottesini No.1 in F# minor, or the Koussevitsky Concerto. Anybody have any opinions on the matter or other suggestions that they think is better than those two?

Someone told me, it was because the cello used to be the bass instrument in the orchestra until the double bass came around and was written an octave below that. I don't know, this is what i have been told.

You really need to try a bass before you buy it, which means that ebay should probably be left out as a source. Would you really want to be stuck with crap instrument that felt wrong and sounded terrible? A thousand bucks could get you a brand new one from say a place like guitar center...
