It's uncertain whether those cheaper pickups are going to be any better than the ones you already have. If you know you like the SD or Aguilar ones, get those instead. The price of the recipient bass is irrelevant, what matters is the whole.

do you have a multimeter you can use? the first thing, for me, is always figuring out EXACTLY what each wire is, and not rely on the colour. Once you identify the start and end of each coil you can easily figure out the wiring. Otherwise you're just guessing and here we are.

That's unusual, if anything it's the bass side that needs more distance from the strings.

Can you please elaborate? The idea of having a stronger magnet for the thinner strings sounded intriguing: we generally have to angle the pickups to some degree in order to balance the output across strings.
