    Steels over Nickel??

I like the sound of DEAD stainless steels. Poor man's flats  I've been using D'addario ProSteels for a long time but I'm trying out the Sadowsky Blue Labels now. Whatever my sweat is made of kills nickel strings within a day or two. I find dead nickels sound really "hollow" in the...

What's your rig of choice for this weekend? Part 2.

Weekend run of shows at a couple of nice Theatres. I used my '06 Fender Marcus Miller Jazz with a Sadowsky Pre into my Aguilar AG700 and Berg NXV112 cabs. I've had this bass since I was in high school so it was nice to give it some love after exclusively playing my '69 Fender P for the past...

    Best inexpensive tuner pedal

What's your budget? Joyo or similar probably have decent tuner pedals for "cheap". I personally think you can't beat the TC Electronic Polytune or the old faithful Boss TU-3. I use the Polytune clip-on instead of a pedal tuner and have no complaints.

    Putting gear into storage

Sorry to hear, mate. I hope your situation improves. Along with what others have said above, I would give everything a good clean before putting it in storage to help prevent mould. It might be an idea to chuck some silica gel packs in the boxes and cases and a couple closet dehumidifiers in...

Cheap AND lightweight cab to pair with a Rumble 500

The HB is probably great for the price! But the Rumbles have been around a long time and are very popular for a reason. Plus, the second hand market is better for Rumbles.

Cheap AND lightweight cab to pair with a Rumble 500

Any reason you couldn't just go with a matching Rumble cab? They are only about 17kgs which is still pretty light in the grand scheme.

What's your rig of choice for this weekend? Part 2.

I had my usual second Sunday of the month gig down the valley. This month was a trio with a great vocalist on acoustic guitar and my right hand man/drummer on cocktail kit . We played everything from Green Day to Stevie Ray Vaughan just calling tunes, totally unrehearsed and no charts. I t was a...

What's your rig of choice for this weekend? Part 2.

Same old for this months Blues Jam at the Brewery. My '69 Fender P with LaBellas into the house Aguilar TH500 and no-name 4x10. I had my AG700 and Bergantino NXV112 in the car, but was too lazy to lug. Wish I had though, as my Berg is leagues above that 4x10.

More grief with instruments on planes…

Not necessarily the companies fault, just a bad egg of an employee. At least you guys in the US have a law... In Australia, I check my bass, cross my fingers and hope for the best when flying.

    Best lightweight five string

I would look at the Ibanez EHB series, Cort Space 5 or the Sire M6. All headless, so that might be a no-go for you. But they are all around 3-3.5kgs.

Most suitable method for sending my bass signal to FOH

A passive DI would be the best solution in my experience. That way, you also have a "backup" if your amp dies. I've only had sound guys mic my bass cab a few times in 20 years of playing.

What's your rig of choice for this weekend? Part 2.

First gig with my new (to me) Aguilar AG700 as a replacement for my Ampeg V-4B. The V-4B is a great amp, and not too bad a lug for a tube amp. However, I was finding that I missed the clean headroom of my previous amps (Forte, Puma etc) so when this popped up locally for a decent price, I...

What's your rig of choice for this weekend? Part 2.

I've been a bit quiet on here lately. I've cut down on the number of gigs I'm taking (needed a bit of a break) plus had a couple gigs rained out, so haven't really needed to post. Last weekend I had a trio gig in a small pub and the weekend before I had my usual blues jam at a Brewery. I...

One Amazing bass + amp OR Several good basses + amps ?

I usually play the same bass on every gig (although I do own a couple others). For me, it keeps everything consistent so that I can focus on my playing and performing. I like to keep it simple and minimise the variables. Whether or not that makes me a better musician… who’s to say? The same...
