I read up on the pre-amps, it says they only work with passive pickups. My pickups are passive right? And what exactly does a preamp do and what will it do to the sound? Sorry for my noob questions I have been playing bass for almost 10 years but this is only my second bass.

Here is my new MIM Fender Jazz bass that I bought yesterday. The body is alder. Overall I am pleased with it so far, it is a unique colour not a vintage-look-alike, you don't see many electron blues out there. I want to add a new pickguard...ideas? So far I am thinking of peal blue or white, or...
