The many Basses of John McVie

    That is an understatement.

New drop-in pickup suggestions for EB3 bridge pickups.

The Wilkinson has blades and drops right in. Curtis Novak's EB, likewise. Ask to make certain. EB-Bridge DiMarzio used to make a replacement but it's long discontinued.

The many Basses of John McVie

Rick wasn't set up to bend the koa over to cover the arm rest so he suggested the black fiber laminate in between the top and the mahogany body. I was going to write "light mahogany" but that referred to the color only. That bass was one of the heaviest I ever owned.

The many Basses of John McVie

John McVie never owned this bass but I got to hear him play it when I walked into Rick Turner's shop one afternoon. As they were talking about how nice it was, I interrupted with, "and Rick can build one just like it for you, too. I've been waiting three years for this one." It was not unheard...

How many of you out there just plug straight in and play? No effects, just pure bass and amp?

For decades, I joked that my only effect was a coil cord—kept me from tripping on stage. I liked the sound of my blackface Showman at higher volume levels. Likewise, for high volume gigs, I went through the tube preamp circuit on my MESA 2000 (these also have an FET preamp circuit that I rarely...

NBD: 1959 Fender Jazz Bass!! *Pic heavy*

The bridge pickup should sound pretty good with modern speakers (may have to re-magnetize the polepieces but that's easy). Anyway, wouldn't be hard to reproduce. That middle pickup is a curiosity only. Again, easy to copy since un-drilled Jazzmaster covers are readily available. The pole...

Is It Appropriate To Take Home A Doggie Bag From A Gig ?

At the end of the gig, if there’s leftover food, feel free to take another plate or sandwich. As for anything more, if the caterer hasn’t already offered, it is certainly fine to ASK THE CATERER (or host) if it’s ok to take home leftovers. If the answer is, “Sure, it’s going to get thrown away”...

NBD: 1959 Fender Jazz Bass!! *Pic heavy*

Exactly. Leo’s GP interview stated that, in fact, was the problem with the original, 4-pole P-Bass: speakers couldn’t handle the impulse. The single magnets under the strings of the bridge PU can’t give the same spike since the arc is less. I’ve little doubt that the pole spacing of the neck PU...

P-J pickups: Genius? Or the mullet of pup configs?

Looks like an opportunity to install something interesting to me.

P-J pickups: Genius? Or the mullet of pup configs?

P-bass pickups are side by side humbuckers. J-bass are single coils. The problem with a P/J is that half of the P is out of polarity with the J. No problem if you’re willing to throw a little money at the problem. There are a few who can rewind the J as a side by side humbucker. For best...

    Are these dummy coils?

Looks like an attempt at making a stacked humbucker without going to the trouble of actually making one. Those 6 poles on the guitar pickup don’t matter—the ones on top pick up the strings.

Reviving a 1952 Fender Precision Bass

I can’t imagine a better outcome for this old beauty. Play it and enjoy!

Did you go for the Alnico III or V magnets? NORDSTRAND AUDIO Welcome to Nordstrand Audio Cool bass. I miss my '68 T-Bass, too. Stupidly traded it away after going exclusively 5-string in the late 1980s.

    Reverb prices

If people are paying them, then that’s what the market will bear, “sadly” or not.

    Reverb prices

The level of entitlement in this thread is appalling. If you find bargains, then great—go for them but you are not entitled to low pricing. Reverb takes a healthy cut of the price and so does eBay. Shipping costs a lot of money in the UK and the USA. That’s a fact. Pandemic, politics, supply...
