IIRC the classic Fender Jazz bass wiring has quirks where cutting the vol on one pup affects the other pup... They don't change it b/c that's how it has always been and they don't want to alienate the purists.... So perhaps that's the reason?

I have not... Looks like it *might* be a simple solution for a headless conversion... I can't tell if it is generally a drop in or would require modification behind the nut... Granted I've been staring at it for 5 minutes while in a state of sleep deprivation...

I can't speak to the body shape but at 25" scale, you are in guitar territory... If you can find a wide 6 string or 7 string guitar, you could mod it to be a bass! Do not listen to the people that say you can't use bass string on a guitar neck. The tension is not going to snap it. I did it...

I believe the crimping and shrink tubing are not as reliable/viable for most flats/tapes, mostly for rounds.

Yup, give it a thorough lookover when you first get it and before modding. Alternative idea for a 25.5" scale is shop for 7 string guitar necks at that scale... it gives you just a little bit more width up and down the neck and then make the body to taste.
