Looking at used basses is just so depressing lately...

What I don't get is why people offering used gear think they ought to get so close to of the price buying the gear new, with warranty. Take pedals for example. Buy it new, play it for a couple of weeks, and send it back if you don't like it. Take it out to a gig, or a rehearsal. At least you're...

    Exercises: useful or not?

Yesterday I had a great chat with a new teacher who I really connected with. I think this guy is more experienced in teaching, and has more of the approach I’m looking for. He outlined some of the methodologies he uses in teaching, and seemed to really understand me. I’m going to cancel the...

That would be great! Please send it.

    Exercises: useful or not?

This makes a lot of sense to me, and perhaps that's why the teacher responded the way he did. I laid out pretty carefully what I wanted the lessons for. I sing lead and play bass in a Rockabilly/Country/Rock Oldies trio, and have no aspirations beyond those areas. I've been in bands on one...

    Exercises: useful or not?

What an incredible practice routine. If I did this every day, I'm not sure I'd actually need a teacher. There wouldn't be time to do any lesson assignments! But seriously, I'll try some of these, and I think I'll try one more lesson with this teacher and see what he lays out for me.

    Exercises: useful or not?

Ah-ha. Can you answer a question for me? "Bass Fitness" doesn't give any indication as to which finger you should use for plucking. For the most part I alternate first and middle finger, but when switching between strings, I saw on one lesson online that you should use the middle finger when...

    Exercises: useful or not?

Yeah, I have 12 years of experience on bass, and perhaps he has ideas as to what he should focus me on. I guess I'm just a little surprised - I'm used to teachers starting out with a challenging set of assignments.

    Exercises: useful or not?

Wow, thanks Groove Doctor! Your posts make a lot of sense. I don’t think I’m locked into a DB mind set though. I switched from guitar to EB at first, got into a band and played for a couple of years, and then got into DB when that band was over. Now I’m back on EB. But I think you’re right, I...

    Exercises: useful or not?

I've been a music student all my life, and had a lot of fun in bands. I'm pretty much always in a band, or starting a new one. Over the years I've had a lot of different teachers - on piano, guitar, and bass. I'm used to doing exercises, and actually don't mind doing them. I always thought of...

Problem Neck on a MIM Jazz

I sent the neck to www.WarpedNeck.com. The guy there told me that it was the worst warped neck he'd ever seen! What an honor for me. Anyway, he said the neck wasn't twisted, and he could fix the warp. I'm a little bit skeptical, but I'll just have to see. I once bought a G&L guitar brand new...

    Seller wants his bass back?

This seems like a question Miss Manners could answer. IMHO, you're under no obligation whatsoever, but if it's all the same to you, I would consider selling it back for what you paid, the cost of your upgrades, the shipping costs, and a fair amount to compensate you for your time already spent...

What Kind of Pickups Came Stock in a 2005 MIM Jazz Bass?

Thanks for the reply. Maybe you can educate me on something. I don't understand why a player would want higher output pickups. For me, I use a solid state B-Max preamp, and a very high powered QSC power amp. The rig provides a ridiculous amount of headroom. I bought the Jazz because I'm looking...

What Kind of Pickups Came Stock in a 2005 MIM Jazz Bass?

Recently picked up a 2005 MIM Jazz. I like it a lot, but being a nosy sort of fella, I'm curious about what kind of pickups might have been installed by the factory during that period. The bass has a very nice to all by itself, but I find it doesn't quite cut through the mix in my Rock band as...

Problem Neck on a MIM Jazz

I knew somebody was going to scold me for not checking out the neck more carefully when I bought it. But my excuse is that I met the guy on a cold windy parking lot, and I thought whatever bow there would be in the neck could be fixed by a truss rod tightening. I'm used to that. And I didn't...
