I played trumpet in marching band all through Jr High and High School. Wanted to be a rock star, as required by being a teenager. So, I started playing guitar, but quickly grew tired of looking for a bass player. So, I said, "give me the bass, I'll play it". Haven't put it down since....
Got really irritated at the keys player being able to play lower notes than me, so I ditched the 4 string and bought a 5 string. Actually, a pet peve of mine is when the keys player left hand ventures into my register. Also, I like having a lower string so that I can walk up into notes on the E string instead of always have to walk down. I could play an octave up, which I like to do during the verse, but I like to play lower during the chorus.
I played a String Ray 5 for years and love that bass. However, I've always loved the traditional Jazz bass low-mid punchy tone. I now have many different basses for different styles & tones. The modern hifi tone from dual soapbar humbuckers is currently my favorite.
