I think it all boils down to no being micro-managed pulls your attention away from entering into worship. If you have to focus on how & what, specifically, someone else wants you to play that you are not entering into worship, then you're just a another musician on the stage. IMHO, that defeats...

Agreed. But, I've had a WL, um, instruct me to play root notes only and whole notes only, nothing else. To me, that crosses a line. Ask me to play when you want what I bring to the music. You can find a beginner bass player to not deviate from the root note.

Me either. The WL should have creative freedom over the song being played, but there is a line between being asked to play more or play less on a song and being told specifically which notes to play and how to play them (whole notes, half notes, et al). This last part is where I draw the line...

Agreed. I would have politely informed him, immediately, that he will need a new bass player going forward. 1) You shouldn't treat people that way, 2) You can't manage volunteers that way. If he wants the bass line played a very specific way, then he needs to play it himself.
