Looking for a fanless, small, cheap class D mono power amp

It really does not. @agedhorse I would appreciate if you would add me to your "ignored" list so that you won't see my posts and respond to them. You and I don't see eye to eye.

Looking for a fanless, small, cheap class D mono power amp

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I have been using this thing for noodling at home (in a case with the preamp) and it's fine and sounds good, but bulky. I was thinking a modern class D amp would be cheap, more powerful, and small -- but I'm starting to think @Giraffe is right. The prices...

Looking for a fanless, small, cheap class D mono power amp

Thanks, I'm definitely a DIY'er, and this is for home use and small scale stuff, so those ICE units are a good lead for me. But I don't know if I'd agree they're crazy cheap. This is exactly what I did up to now with this amp, but the power amp is a little bit too underpowered and big (class A...

Looking for a fanless, small, cheap class D mono power amp

I have a preamp I like. I want to stuff it into a box with a small power amp -- not more than 500 watts and probably 300 is fine -- but I don't want a fan, so something small enough to have just a heatsink. I don't even know where to begin because it seems like there loads of things like this...

What does a bad capacitor sound like?

Yeah I miss radio shack for that. But there's not enough demand, even in big cities. To replace a tone cap, you have to order one from mouser and by the time you pay shipping, you're $15 in for a capacitor and waiting a week. :meh:

What does a bad capacitor sound like?

Yeah this has happened to me on very old instruments. Replaced a pot and soldered the crusty old tone pot capacitor back in, and it can make noise. But it's still more likely the pot if you haven't replaced that yet. They're five bucks and carry them at all guitar shops.

DiMarzio dp149 jazz pickups are ceramic + alnico 5. ?

Great - thanks for that. I might try to DIY one of that design. I really wonder why they decided to do this, and what the intended effect is. I listened to a bunch of samples of jazz bass pickups and these were favs, and then saw the unusual design.

DiMarzio dp149 jazz pickups are ceramic + alnico 5. ?

I understand from the description that these DiMarzio pickups use both ceramic AND alnico magnets. :bookworm: Does anyone happen to know how these pups are designed? Do they put a ceramic magnet underneath an alnico, and just generally, what the heck? I realize that they are split side by side...

Ampeg SVT 3 pro tube preamp section troubleshooting

I like to get the the room, with a DPA omni. So maybe I will trade this amp for something with a big ol heatsink but also the tube pre, or maybe a newer GK; I guess I'm not the only one who is a fan of no fans.

Ampeg SVT 3 pro tube preamp section troubleshooting

Thanks much, that's useful. Mine has a little bit of a vibration to it that makes it louder -- it's 20 years old -- so it's got to go and a new fan should help a lot. That's what I mean when I say it's quieter pointing down - on account of the vibration. But still, I guess even with your amount...

Ampeg SVT 3 pro tube preamp section troubleshooting

Sweet. If you do that pot, would be great if you could post pics of the process so others know how it goes and the part source. I wonder how much hassle it is (whether it's worth it) to get to the under side of that board. Pulled my 40 year old GK back out, and not sure this Ampeg is really...

Ampeg SVT 3 pro tube preamp section troubleshooting

Hey thanks man. Mine was the ST24A3. Glad to know that a new one will be quieter. Mine was pushing back, as in over the transformers/resistors, which is how it should be -- that or pushing straight down over them from the top also works :wacky::woot::wacky::woot::wacky:. If your fan was...

Ampeg SVT 3 pro tube preamp section troubleshooting

Thanks for looking. I opened up, cleaned and lubed the fan - 3o minutes of my time on earth that I won't get back - helped a little but not much. I also called Ampeg - the guy was nice but not especially helpful. Just gave me the part number of the direct replacement. He said he knows there are...

Ampeg SVT 3 pro tube preamp section troubleshooting

So did you get the exact same fan as stock replacement from Ampeg, or a different fan? I think they have it on digikey or something. Some engineering genius on another board tested a few and posted their noise levels. As for the horse guy, I don't care if he's the head of NASA -- his posts are...

Ampeg SVT 3 pro tube preamp section troubleshooting

Yes, thanks I appreciate it - I was referring to the other guy, who responds to every technical post with self-serving, condescending, unhelpful and often wrong answers. Every internet board, whether it's talking about volkswagens, coding, or knitting cat sweaters has those guys in their 60s who...
