Controversial Opinion: Gibson Basses Questionable Design Choices

I don't care for their bridges, that nutsert into the wood and then a screw in stud holding a tail piece. I've had the nut-serts pull out of the wood. Had to glue the nut sert back into the body. I was never sure if it would pull out again maybe on a gig so I unloaded it on CL. I'm a Fender guy...

If Someone Subs for You, and the Gig goes well, does the Sub play next time, too?

I was in a situation where we had a sub guitarist. The manager from a different hotel came in and hired us on the spot. We used the sub for the other hotel gig. Our thinking was the sub we used for the first gig had "auditioned" for the hotel manager so he copped the gig. Our regular guitarist...

    Double Bass My small rig

A while back some one started a thread, that was a show case for small rigs, unfortunately I haven't found that thread. This is a picture of the rig I use for string bass and EUB: Carvin speaker MG 115 (replaced original 8 ohm speaker with Carvin 4 ohm) GK MB 500 (which recently replaced my...

    RIP Joe Osborn.....

Had similar experience with Joe at the Lakland stand at NAMM; he let me fondle THE FENDER JAZZ BASS, that was on display. Very personable guy!

What’s the cheapest bass you’ve been/are amazed with?

Rogue Beatle bass, $179, new from Musicians Friend; wife bought it just because she thought it was cool looking. Had it for about ten years, it had the right sound and feel for that kind of bass; regret having to sell it but my cat needed cancer surgery.

    Favorite 5 String Bass

I've had my EB SR V for almost 20 years; tried at least a dozen other five strings looking for a "back up" I end up getting rid of them. If EB ever makes a passive 5-string I'll be all over it like a fat lady on a toilet seat.

    Do you bi-amp?

My rule for live playing is I don't bring more gear than I can carry in one trip; not two cabinets for sure. I use a line out into house PA, so I guess that means I'm getting bi-amped.

Double Bass How to stop feedback on string bass?

My problem is, when playing on smaller stages, loud ass guitar players will vibrate my string bass causing feedback. Are there EQ settings that will mitigate the feedback? I usually play through a 115 cabinet with Ampeg MB 200. Thx for your comments.

Who Else Started Bass at 14, or some other crazy young age?

Started upright at age 13; played first bass guitar gig at 14 years old; at 70 years I still love playing; what a long strange trip it has been!

You walk into a recording studio, 3 basses are hanging on the wall...

I'm with you on all counts I prefer my own axes, a Pbass with Fwd, a Jbass with rotosounds and A 5- string MM SR5, pretty much covers it. As far a FRETLESS goes if it's wanted I will use my acoustic string bass or KK EUB. The rest of my basses were impulse buys, just to lazy to sell them.

Does a 4-string bass become obsolete after picking up a 5-string?

I use a MM SRV for live playing only if I can plug into the PA; don't really care for the sound of a 5string below E when recording. I also play upright; it's more comfortable FOR ME, when switching between bass guitar and upright to use a 4string on those gigs.
