Try a bit of distortion - I found it got me a lot closer to the classic Stranglers bass sound.

Thanks for the reply - I've been looking at the TC Helicon pedals myself; the only off-putting thing with them is that they don't appear to have instrument jack sockets, just XLR in and out. As for 'catching some heat for reviving a zombie thread', I can handle as much virtual heat as anyone can...

I've found autotune works well on fretless bass with the right settings; ie. correction speed low otherwise slides sound fretted. It really helps with intonation - of course, I know learning to play fretless properly and accurately would negate the need for it but it's a good solution for now...
