Double Bass Time for a Dead Spiros Club

My Spirocore Mittel strings are now officially over an year old. I raise a glass to another 9 years with them not leaving my bass :D

Double Bass Shadow SH 965 NFX-B is it any good

Sorry to bring up such an old thread but I also have this pickup installed on my DB and it's quite a disappointment so far. The tone lacks low end, the output is ridiculously low and there's a very noticeable hiss. Wish I had gone for the cheaper K&K Bass Max instead.

    Double Bass D'Addario Zyex

I had my bass set-up with the mediums by a local luthier. My bridge doesn't have adjusters, the action is not super low but low enough, I guess. I really liked how the Zyex lights sound in the video I watched, I can't say I love the spiros that much, they sound really bright on my bass, maybe...

    Double Bass D'Addario Zyex

I'm considering buying a set of Zyex lights after watching a video review. I'm a beginner to DB and right now the medium Spirocores on my bass are a bit tough for me to play. Maybe it would be a good idea to use something that's easier on the fingers as I'm getting used to the instrument and put...

    Double Bass NBD: Strunal 5/27

Link Removed But so far I haven't tried it in a live/rehearsal situation with a loud bass amp so I don't know yet if I'm happy with the pickup.

    Double Bass NBD: Strunal 5/27

Orpheus and Kremona are notoriously bad communist era guitars and basses :D , my first electric guitar was an Orpheus. However, Kremona nowadays produces great instruments, especially their classical guitars, also very nice fully carved double basses but are out of my price range.

    Double Bass NBD: Strunal 5/27

I'm finally in the DB camp with a Strunal 5/27 with carved spruce top and laminated tineowood back & ribs. After it arrived last Friday, I took it to a luthier to set it up with Spirocore Medium strings for pizz playing and install a Shadow NFX 965 pickup. I am in love with it, it sounds (to my...

Double Bass Should I have the fingerboard replaced?

After a lot of consideration and contacting the luthier that had inspected the bass, I decided to pass on it. It's a good instrument at a fair price but it wasn't worth investing in all the "upgrades" that I wanted and I didn't love the finish. Instead, thanks to some opinions I've read on this...

Double Bass Should I have the fingerboard replaced?

Thank you all for the input! I have no idea, pretty sure it's nothing fancy. I plugged it into Roland D-Bass 210 combo, the combo needed a bit of tweaking to tackle the feedback problems but I think it sounded OK. Eric Hochberg - To me it seems that there aren't any problems with the bridge...

Double Bass Should I have the fingerboard replaced?

Thank you for the opinion. Actually, stripping the rest of the paint and having it look a bit like the fingerboard of a fretless maple Fender p-bass might turn out really cool. As for buying a better bass, I've been looking into it for the last few weeks but there's nothing I could try in a...

Double Bass Should I have the fingerboard replaced?

Next week I'm planning on buying my first double bass. It an old Kremona (Bulgarian) hybrid/semi-massive/etc 3/4 double bass with spruce top. I think it was made in the early 90s. I'll be using it only for pizzicato, mostly jazz and some rockabilly. I've already tried it and I think it sounds...

Double Bass Is it worth it getting a hybrid? (for rockabilly)

Thanks for the opinions, I'll just go with the ply then. T-Bird - indeed, I've seen some old instruments for sale but most of them are owned by classical musicians and are fully carved. I'm not sure if I could find a well made old plywood bass around here.

Double Bass Is it worth it getting a hybrid? (for rockabilly)

Hi guys, I've been playing guitar and el. fretted & fretless bass for 9 years and decided that it's finally my time to get myself a double bass, mostly for rockabilly stuff. I'm in Europe and my budget is around 1000 euro + some extra cash for new strings and a luthier setup. After some...

Hipshot A style bridge - brass or aluminum?

Hi guys, I have a Cort 5-str. bass and I would like to replace the bridge. I have already swapped the EQ and pick-ups for high-end Bartolini's which give me a very full and balanced sound but I would like to add a bit more brilliance (top-end sparkle). I'll be buying a Hipshot A style...
