How would solo strings in standard tuning sound while playing jazz? Sorry for the flood of question, but my only other source of info is my instructor who's strictly an orchestral bassist.

How do detuned solo strings sound and play? I mean in terms of brightness, tone, playability, etc.

Would I be ok tuning up my D'Addario Medium Helicores up a step for solo playing or am I going to have to buy the actual solo strings? I'm sure buying the strings are better but I don't want to spend $100 just for one recital. My main concern would be breaking the strings, or the body.

I might have used one before, not sure. I can confirm that it was a 4x10 SWR that goes up to 800 watts and I thought it was great.

I need a new upright bass for university (the $450 one I got from Ebay isn't good enough) and I came across an $1800 Mirabella bass at a local music store. It plays better than the one I have now but I'm just wondering if anyone else here has experience with Mirabella basses before.
