I'm Joey, and I've been playing bass since Christmas 2000, just before I turned 14.
I didn't actually start taking bass seriously until 2016, when I taught myself to learn a song by ear (instead of leaning on tabs) and started my pursuit of tone in earnest.
For better or worse, I haven't learned theory; I know what sounds good for a song, and I don't feel like I need to know why. As long as my lines complement the song, I feel mighty good about what I'm doing.
I've never been a good jammer (probably that lack of theory), but instead prefer to get a demo recorded to listen to over and over and over until I hear a bass line. Then, it's just a matter of getting it out of my head and onto the fretboard.
