Double Bass All in with 5ths tuning

Thanks for encouragement. Honestly, I see 5ths as another flavour or colour pallet. I'm sure there's plenty of work I could do on my playing that would benefit 4ths or 5ths playing. For now, I think I'll shelve it. I can't see a great benefit in swapping at this time. I can always come back to...

Double Bass All in with 5ths tuning

Hmm, I only just had these strings put on recently. And I REALLY love them for 4ths playing. Maybe I should shelve this for a couple of years til I need a string change.

Double Bass All in with 5ths tuning

Had my first go of playing in 5ths at church this morning. I discovered during rehearsal that the E string tuned down is not effective for pizz. If I'm going to do this properly, I'll need to buy a B string. I've been enjoying it at home, but the PU won't properly produce the pitches effectively...

Double Bass All in with 5ths tuning

Okay, so I'm back at it again. Trying some scales and things. I'm finding the A to be a LOT brighter than the rest of the strings. I guess that's a touch thing? I also dropped the action a lot (ala Red Mitchell) and the C string is easier to play on. All my cross string intervals feel so weird...

Double Bass Red Mitchell... This is wonderful.

DAMN! That is the very opposite of the sort of playing I'm used to. Low action. Lots of sustain. Soft plucking. Wow. Still an upright sound, but man. He wasn't really a bow player was he?

Sure, but my question still stands. Are you using the C string much in this tuning if you're not playing orchestral repertoire?

Double Bass All in with 5ths tuning

On a whim, I tuned my bass to 5ths yesterday. It's got a standard set of EP weichs on it. After an hour or two of playing, I've got the hang of the notes... I think. What I'm struggling to figure out is how the E... sorry, I mean "C" string is now much use to me. I mean, I often found myself...

Reverendrally's rolling cavalcade of luthiery horror

Spent a while on this guitar yesterday. Lots of things done. Frets, locking nut, board cleaned and oiled, strings on and trem set... ish. The piano bass was supposed to get some attention too, but missed out. P.s. I think I put the locking nut on backwards. Not changing it now though. :rollno:

[SBO24] First cnc guitar from scrap wood

Late to this build, but impressed. Scrap wood is awesome. It's all has the best "tone". :D

Poor old Samick had no shielding paint at all. Didn't want to order some, so I tried making my own with acrylic house paint and some graphite. Maybe two or three teaspoons into 50ml or so. Can't be worse than none at all.

WBO 2024 - Best heirloom piano archtop bass for... umm

Got the back brace glued on yesterday after stuffing around. I tried to knock the position nail straight through the old piano braces, but the grain was diagonal so the nails went diagonal too. LOL. Had to pre-drill the holes. Bass body is going together well now. A few things I need to do...

ZOMBIE Thread!!! But yeah, I did some stuff finally. Apologies for the guitard content, but I like saving old cool stuff. The red will get some church duties. Dunno what I'm gonna do with the MIJ classical yet, but it's all solid, now-rare, timbers.

Double Bass Helping my solos stand out?

Bit of an update. Gt player and singer got back to me. Turns out they had a great time too and we've got some new leads for gigs in that area. So yeah, happy days and hopefully more gigs. :)

Double Bass Helping my solos stand out?

Yeah, had them and hated them. I'm working on that actually. :)
