    Looking for new bass gear

One of your considerations really needs to be power. One question you should ask yourself is how powerful are the sound systems in the venues on average. If they are usually quite powerful I would say the 2x10 will do you fine. I play a Mesa Boogie M6 Carbine through and Eden 1x15 cab I love the...

List of Jazz standards in various styles to assist learning?

BassChuck gave a nice list of tunes with memorable bass lines, I would also add: Maiden Voyage - Herbie Hancock Footprints - Wayne Shorter Equinox - Wayne Shorter The focus of jazz bass playing especially if we are talking about standards and 1920-60's era jazz is not repetitive bass line...

Should a Hired Gun Have Standards?

It's easy enough to say you are too busy to commit to a band but you will play gigs when your available. Just negotiate a price per gig and stick to it. Everyone at some point has taken gigs they aren't totally excited about for the money, and as previous posts have said, maybe playing with...

How many of us GIGGING bassists use pedals?

Everyone should run at least 1 pedal, that being the Chromatic Tuner pedal!! No matter what genre, you gotta be in tune, and your tuning will change throughout the night. Also being able to mute your bass easily is a plus. Along with my tuner I also run a Boss OC-2 Octave into a Q-tron. I...

Do you agree with this video?

One of my former teachers had this advice. You have two ears, one is for you, the other for the rest of the band. Rob

turned amp on, just a loud buzz

Are you in an apartment or old jam space? Some older buildings and apartments have really dirty power that could transfer a buzz or hum through your rig. Not much you can do about it, maybe try getting a power conditioner if it really bugs you. Hopefully the venue has better power!

What are the attributes of a great sound man?

Hey all, as the sticky says this isn't a thread to bash on sound guys. I am however interested in what you think are the positive aspects of what makes a great sound guy. For me, I like it when they are assertive and lead the soundcheck. I'm playing at the club that night, but its their...

What album made you want to play the bass?

I have a few that I started listening to all at the same time. Probably Dookie by Green Day, Smashing Pumpkins mellon collie and infinite sadness, and I remember really liking the Godzilla soundtrack, It had Rage against the machine, jamiroquai, and some other really great bass lines. How...

    Orange Tiny Terror Bass Amp

I just tried one of new(ish) Orange Tiny Terror bass amps for a rehearsal. It was with a matching orange 2x10 cab. I really liked it. The one thing I didn't like is that even though it had its own case you can't put it in a rack case. I feel like it could get damaged pretty easily traveling...

    Traynor 2x8 Dynabass 300 Review

If anyone is looking into a new lightweight amp I figure I'd give you my 2 cents on this one. Originally I was looking for a small lightweight combo amp for rehearsals and gigs. The three models I was debating between were the Genz Benz 1x12 Shuttle 6.0 setup, a Markbass 1x12 combo and the...
