YES, it is! Just noticed this now, did a search and ended up on this (ancient) thread. It definitely sounds authentic; the fret 'clang' at 5:25 is present on both isolated track and the band track, for example. Most likely it was edited in from another take or overdubbed for whatever reason.

Bought a Ric 4001 in 1982 for 400. Sold it in 1988, regretted it since 2000 or so.

I prefer 4-string bass.

For myself, Jaco's essence (or genius if you wanna use that word) lies in his playing in a group context. It's fun to hear him play jaw-dropping, impossible solos, but ultimately this has diminishing returns for me. I don't really need to hear Teen Town one more time, but I will never get...
