You may not be a virtuoso right off the bat, but most anything new needs to be learned and perfected.
There is positively no reason you should not be able to play fretless well given time and a bit of practice.

Can't say you are wrong, I can only say it has worked for me for many years, with no ill-effects. I suppose if one were to hose components down with too much product or use the wrong version of the spray it could well do as you say.
I can only testify to what has worked well for me.
I second that, cones are a relatively easy do-it-yourself or just pay someone to fix them. I'm talking re-coning, which appears daunting, but really isn't; I mean if I can do it anyone can...
