    Shielding/Star Grounding Troubleshooting Help Needed

I hear you man. I know alot of folks become obsessed with the mystique of Orange drops and bumblebees and what not when they probably couldn't tell one from the other in a blind listening test. It sounds like you know more about electronics than the average guitarist, and I can understand the...

    Shielding/Star Grounding Troubleshooting Help Needed

I don't understand it enough to explain it to you (or to myself), though I believe that you have to have both of them reversed for it to work in a humbucking context. Just swapping the wires when the pickups have the same magnetic polarity results in the thin, phase cancelled sound referenced...

Those are some sweet-looking instruments on your webpage, by the way.

Yes, and Yes. All cavities are grounded and connected together, and the copper foil comes out over the edge to make contact with the pickguard, which is also covered in copper foil (the kind with conductive adhesive). I've checked with my multimeter to make sure the cavities are common. I...

    Shielding/Star Grounding Troubleshooting Help Needed

Hi Dave, Thanks for your post. Though I never responded as such, I am going to do just what you did. I think if there is an issue with my wiring, it lies in the ring terminal I used for the star ground. So I'm getting rid of it and going back to soldering to the pot casings. Even...

    Shielding/Star Grounding Troubleshooting Help Needed

First off, I'm also a guitarist... I went with the Orange Drop because I wanted to be able to take a side in the "voodoo" debate based on real experience. I swear my tone control does sound different now, though it could be "gear placebo" or other factors, such as the nicer pots...

    Shielding/Star Grounding Troubleshooting Help Needed

I thought of this, but unfortunately, the compass reads "south" on all four pickups. Dammit. I was just reading on another forum that one of the cost cutting measures in the MIM jazz basses (especially the older ones) is to basically mount two neck pickups (no reverse polarity). And the...

    Shielding/Star Grounding Troubleshooting Help Needed

I must admit that I am considering bagging the star ground. This is a kick-around bass, and I did this whole thing just as a project to see how quiet I could make it. So far it is exactly as noisy as it was before. This being said, I checked out that youtube video posted above, which led...

    Shielding/Star Grounding Troubleshooting Help Needed

Interesting. I read about that step, but skipped it because I understood it to be a purely shock-preventative measure (not that that's a bad thing). Do you think this could affect the hum?

    Shielding/Star Grounding Troubleshooting Help Needed

Thanks for this advice. The bass is silent with the pickup volumes down. I want to make sure I understand you correctly. When you say, "if that is the case..." at the beginning of the second paragraph above, are you referring to if they do hum with the volumes down, or if they are quiet...

    Shielding/Star Grounding Troubleshooting Help Needed

Thanks Craig. I'm happy to post some, but I'll have to do it later from home. I re-wired it the same way it was before, and though it was noisy, setting both volumes all the way up did make a difference if I recall. Though this is certainly worth a try.

Thanks Buchananbass. The wiring is the same, except for the star grounding.

    Shielding/Star Grounding Troubleshooting Help Needed

Hello, I just finished re-wiring a noisy-as-hell Fender MIM Jazz bass, and the results are not satisfactory. It's a model from the 90's, when they used the cheapo mini pots. Here's what I did: *Lined the entire control cavity with conductive-adhesive copper foil, with a lip around...
