I'm a musician and a very serious one, but my primary instrument is sax. I am learning to play bass partly for its own sake and partly because I use basslines a lot more than chord progressions for songwriting, both in jazz and in rock/pop.
I have no intentions of ever becoming a professional bassist, although on the offchance that happens I can imagine far worse fates.
