Also not a single song or bassline here - more and more these days I realise it was Mike Rutherford in Gabriel-era Genesis that made the bass sing to me. Subliminal at the time but he's probably my biggest single inspiration and influence.

I play electric bass in an acoustic trio. Compression is absolutely the kiss of death - zero feel, kills the delicate dynamics! If the sound person is using compression I have to get them to take it off, which is sometimes a struggle. I do understand its uses in other musical environments though.

OK, long time since this thread was active, but I stumbled across it today... that photo mgeek provided a link to above is of my bass! Yay! Gorgeous and unusual thing, and a tone monster. I love it. I got googling around as I'm looking at buying a F-W Portabass 15 amp to go with it, how cool...
