Absolutely true! I am embarrassed to say I’ve played over 1000 hours of various video games with essentially nothing to show for it. I imagine how much better a musician I would be if that time was spent practicing. (That thought alone is depressing...)

Lately the bass thing has evolved past playing just one instrument into music in its entirety. Like alternately playing guitar and congas to develop rhythm and chord theory. And besides congas are fun! Did I mention the OCD thing? Playing out is another big motivator for obvious reasons. And...
