Pretty late on this thread but have to say the NM I recently picked up is fantastic. I've had many early 70's P Basses and this is one really NAILS that whole vibe. The neck profile is what really sold me...meaty and fast at the same time , perfect neck pocket with a light and resonant ash body...

I agree with Cyborg and like the gloss finish...never bothers me at all and actually prefer it. The 50's Classic P is one of Fender's best deals imo and lacks for nothing as a great Precision at any price point.

The new MM's appear to be using the same necks as the MIM 70's reissues..much beefier than my CIJ.

I've played both and prefer the Japanese version. I like the old reverse tuners and will take Japanese quality control anyday.

I recently played a Dingwall 5 that was unlike any other I have experienced (but I hated the way it looked). Lakland and Sadowsky are both great, but this was in another league altogether.

Don't mind the gloss neck on these, as it's vintage correct, but they're just too skinny and unstable for my liking. I've had quite a few early 70's Jazz basses and every one of them had a beefier neck than the Geddy.
