I have an Aria FEB, which is pretty good acoustically, stylish and reasonably priced. The Takamine TB10 is a higher quality - and about 10 times the price - instrument and has an extendable endpin which can also be used upright style - which might allow you to harness floor coupling.

Did the OP settle on a bass? Playing acoustically involves projection and player feedback, not just volume. If others can hear you, then you could try a soundhole on the side facing the player. There are guitars available with thse, but you, or a luthier, can always create a hole ... I'm sure...
