To paraphrase: the bass is like a bridge between the drums and the rest of the band. You don't follow the guitar because you're basically going to fight. Similarly, you don't exactly follow the drum kick 100% either. It's something I do intuitively so I can't really verbally tell you how to do it.

I think this all boils down to personal preference. I personally prefer mechanically difficult pieces, but of course, when music demands space (something you can feel), you have to give it the space it needs.
