Basses that “fight you”, but you love them anyway

I had a late 90's 5 string Warwick Corvette I recently sold. Felt like wearing a boat anchor on a strap. It was a pain in the ass to work on and set up. Neck felt like a baseball bat and the strings felt further apart than they should have. However, I absolutely love the sound those Warwicks...

Which EMG set fits my Warwick Corvette?

To anyone in the future researching this topic: the Corvette Standard 5 uses two LJ pickups. Standard jazz bass pickups come in a long and a short pickup. The long is for the bridge, short for the neck on four strings. On a 5 string Corvette it takes two long J pickups. So don’t order the EMG J...

Which EMG set fits my Warwick Corvette?

I have a ‘99 Warwick Corvette 5 string with two J style MEC pups that I’d like to upgrade to an EMG set. Just wanted to check with the TB gurus to make sure which set I need to buy first. My guess is the EMG J5 set? Thanks

Changing preamp tubes for more drive on a ‘74 SVT

Thanks for all the info! So according to the parallel out ‘69 spec, with the two “Ext. Amp” ours, a master volume wouldn’t work. I’ll try rolling the 12ax7 in the DW7 positions and see if I can get the grit back. I was also thinking about getting another Hotplate (4ohm) to just shave 4 or 8dB...

Changing preamp tubes for more drive on a ‘74 SVT

On the back, other than the two speaker jacks, there are two jacks labeled “Ext. Amp”. I’ve never used these but would assume they’re both outs?

Changing preamp tubes for more drive on a ‘74 SVT

4 on the amp is about 10 o’clock. Any louder than that is pretty devastating. But previously I could always get a healthy amount of overdrive at this position. Could throwing 12ax7s in place of the DW7 without the mod damage the amp?

Changing preamp tubes for more drive on a ‘74 SVT

I’ve always been able to get a fair amount of overdrive and grit on my ‘74 SVT with the volume around 4. Awhile back I blew a fuse at a show and got my head completely retubed at my tech, and now I have much more clean headroom. This was awhile back, but I vaguely remember him telling me I had a...

    SVT headroom question

One SVT on the 215/410, one on the 118. Sounds massive, as it should. But the second is a loaner for the night. I find his (a late 70s, mine an early) breaks up a *little* later, but overall prefer the tone of mine. That was switching the heads through the same cabs for reference

    SVT headroom question

Thanks. Starting to look like mine is a perfectly functioning amp. I'll still get it checked up just to avoid any future issues. But I've started looking into a second head :D
