    Arkham Sound Club

I've not tried the Pultec trick before, never having had a piece of gear to do it with, but it occurs to me between the HPF, Lo, Bass, and Range controls, there are many ways to sculpt the low end. How are you all running your EQ?

Is the HX Stomp still a viable “center” to base a pedalboard from?

Never used one, but many do (including you!) and have a great time with it. But for almost as long as I can remember in this forum, you've been trying to find something to get near the REDDI/Empress tone you love. Why not just get that again? Is it really that much of a hassle to have a couple...

    Educate me about Diamond compressors

I can see this, given the circuit. I've found it way easier to retain punch but also get the benefits of a compressor if there is a clean blend. I've come to love relatively aggressive compression blended in with a third or so dry signal. For me, the Lusithand Alma compressor improves on the...

What's your rig of choice for this weekend? Part 2.

This afternoon, we played Walk the Beat, a festival in Grand Haven, Michigan, with about 50 bands at different locations. We were at a cool crunchy wellness place right on the Grand River, a little off the beaten track compared with our previous locations, but the view and breeze could not be...

Testing Compressors: Cali, Smoothie, Empress, Diamond, Keeley, FEA, Darkglass, Doc Lloyd, Lusithand & more

I can't help you with a wall wart, but I would guess the 600mA is just for startup, and that 400mA works okay, as you found out.

Our singer is also a realtor with local firm, and they invited us to play at a customer appreciation night at a local vineyard. The crowd didn't dance but listened and had a great time, the pay was a little better than average, I was home by 9, and we were treated to great tacos. I wish they...

    Echo Fix EF-P5 Fet compressor

I've found attack and release settings that work for me pretty universally, but I've gone back and forth on ratios. Lately though, I've been loving 4:1 and 8:1 punched in together. I love this compressor. It might be my favorite piece of gear other than TI Jazz Flats.

What's your rig of choice for this weekend? Part 2.

Tulip City Bar and Grill tonight. Pretty dead, but it's early on a beautiful day and we're 10 minutes from the beach. In fact, I was at the beach most of the day and was starving when I got here, and thank goodness for great, free tacos.

    What effects do you use?

My ampless board for my bar band is tuner, either octave or drive (depending on set; rarely, I squeeze both on), compressor, and tube preamp. My ampless board for my experimental instrumental duo with my wife is flexible, but most often tuner, drive, PLL, compressor, and tube preamp. I've...

Why did origin effects stop making big box compressors?

If you want a big box 1176, I think the Echo Fix EF-P5 FET Compressor improves on the Cali in the same way the Alma improved on the Diamond.

What's your rig of choice for this weekend? Part 2.

Our drummer and singer have been playing this old money club on Lake Michigan for twenty years, kids' music, Hokey Pokey, musical chairs, a whole elaborate march sequence. They asked if our cover band would play with them a few times this summer, and then play an hour of our regular stuff...

phase 90 type pedal with bettter tracking for bass?

I thought the Whirlwind Orange Box was basically the perfect Phase 90. I never worried about losing low end with it. If you want something thicker and not a Phase 90, the MojoHand Mr. O is incredible on bass.

What's your rig of choice for this weekend? Part 2.

Rehearsal, not gig tonight: Our drummer has basically been music director at an old money summer cottage colony on Lake Michigan for decades, and our singer has worked with him in a little trio that plays the hokey pokey and other kids' music once a week for an hour. This summer, he booked our...
