51 P Bass Project. Last thing to do.

The neck is completely sanded. I taped off the decal hoping to save it then sanded around it. I lightly sanded it to knock off the gloss. Hopefully it looks like a vintage finish when it’s done.

    .920@ 1st fret. 1 inch @ 12th.

When I get home I’ll measure it. The nut width on the original is what I like the most. 1-11/16 is good but the 1.7 which is just a little wider is my favorite.

Yup, 1-11/16 is just a tic under 1.7. Im using the SD 51 Stack as well, great pickup but I’m not sure I have it wired correctly. I found a company in Canada that makes an exact copy of the 51 slab body. One piece ash with the minimalist route for the bridge ground wire. It came painted and...

Porter, I’ve seen those and checked the specs. There’s something about them that turned me off. Maybe the nut width ?? The other reason is, and I make no apologies for this, I can’t stand the band he plays in. The neck I have is the MIM 51 P bass neck. It has the thick profile I like but has a...

Yes. I’ll take a look at what they have. I’ve ordered from them in past. Good quality stuff for sure.

I’ve considered that and if I did go that route I would sand it to a 7.25 radius instead of the current 9.5. I have a spool of Jescar fret wire ready. Thanks for the advice. Much obliged.

Pep, thanks for links but I’m working on a 51 with the Tele headstock. I was on Warmoths website yesterday but they don’t offer any options wider than 1-5/8 nut width and only the modern profile. I’m looking for the true 51-54 spec profile.

(Depends if you are ok with the back of the neck getting a "worn in" look over time. Like real relic vs fake.)This is perfectly said and exactly what I’m after. After all the poly is removed I’ll test a small spot with a coat of lacquer. I plan on leaving the fretboard unfinished.

Yes maple and glossy. And the custom sized sanding blocks are a great idea. I did a test on the area forward of the 20th fret with decent results. The frets have poly all over them except for the crown. I need to do a fret level and crown anyway so I can be a little liberal with sanding. What is...

51 P Bass Project. Last thing to do.

I looked at Warmoth yesterday and went through the pre order process and didn’t feel confident that’s what I want. I think my hang up was nut width and neck depth at the 1st and 12th frets. They don’t offer the 51 profile. What I want is a neck from the AVRI 51 that’s true to vintage spec. I...

96 tbird, what’s your thoughts on heat to remove the poly finish off the fretboard then sanding everywhere else ? I really want the fretboard to be unfinished.
