I know this is an old post, but I am contemplating replacing the machines in my Gibson SG as well. So, I am curious as to what, if anything, you came up with. I am looking at both the Hipshot and GOTOH lightweight machines. Thanks. Derrick

I meant to post this earlier... I went to my local music store and showed them what was going on. The guy there had some individual, in the package strings. Luckily enough, one of them was the exact one I needed. He hooked me up and said he'd get the other string returned. Worked out great.

Very nice. In fact, I was trying to Google this problem and "bulge" was the only word I could think of. Google "bass string bulge" and take a look at the images, if you dare. :)

Kind of a newbie, but I've replaced several sets of string before and I've never seen a string with a "bulge" in the middle of it. It looks something like a seam. (see attached image) Is this string defective? I don't know if it should install it. Any help would be appreciated. Derrick
