If you are not comfortable troubleshooting the electronic problem then I strongly suggest that you take the amp to a qualified technician who does. Then confronted the numbskull who sold it to you like this.

They are simply two different instruments designed from different viewpoints/thinking. They both "tell a story" if you consider their history. And, they have a different tone/feel.

Playing bass with a pick has some really positive benefits you should think about. Because using the pick creates a more percussive, better defined note-tone/sound you can keep better time and sync with him/her. You can "fatten" up the sound from the instrument and amp-EQ/tone controls. But...
