Yes it is possible. You do need to be careful and go rather slow and check and recheck often. I sometimes use this method on guitars and basses that have unfinished necks and enough material available to work with.

Under those circumstances, it's not a rip off. I buy and use them myself as needed simply because the cost in my time is more than price of their shims.

That would depend on the type of shim used. A properly fitted and installed full pocket shim would not decrease the coupling.

I have had to shim bolt-ons before and had no adverse effects from doing so. The tone was improved on those I've had to do. I suspect it has to do with how good the original fit was compared to how good the new fit is.

That is a task that requires not only the correct tools but a specific kind of finesse that can take a long time to develop.

I have to agree with everyone who mentioned a good proper setup. A proper setup can make the cheapest bass play well. I also agree that it is best to learn to do your own setups. When you know how to do it yourself, you can tweek the bass to your heart's content till you find the setup that...

I had a Mikro for a while and absolutely loved it. It is such a fun little bass. But after I got a TMB30 I barely played it anymore. Anyways I got the Gator light weight case for mine and it was a perfect fit as well. When buying strings you need to make sure to get short scale strings.

I've been using mine live since I got it but I have not changed anything on it. It seems fine to me just the way it is. It plays great and sounds great - and it looks great. Which is a rather nice bonus. :)

I've had my TMB30 for a bit over two years now and never had to adjust anything on it. Even here in northern Ohio's climate. It is still as Sweetwater sent it to me except for the strings. It plays and feels wonderful - as it did the day it arrived.
