Fender instruments are very well rounded and in my opinion, a Jazz Bass has the most tonal versatility. It sounds like you might be buying a Fender then!

Ouch, that sucks. I myself have had many similar problems with the stock-bridge on the Thunderbird IV that Gibson was happy to fix, but I eventually broke down and bought a Hipshot SuperTone bridge which actually improved the sustain and made the tone a lot tighter. The only problem is that...
