    Any "Non Slapping" Thumb Players?

    i've never really liked using picks. i don't really use my thumb because it feels awkward to me on bass, unless i'm striking two strings at the same time. on guitar i use all my fingers except for my pinky, ha ha. but i started on bass so my fingers were just more familiar.

    Pain under the fingernail

    i've never encountered any pain under the fingernail. the only way i can think it would happen is if you're fretting with too much force/at an odd angle and pulling the skin away from the nails, or if you cut your nails too short. could you elaborate a little bit?

    i've never been able to slap to a reasonable degree. but then again, i haven't given it my best effort either.
