Why is low tuning on a bass the taboo of music?

Simple: nothing of it comes out if the PA guy likes his equipment intact and wants a clean sound. You normally cut the bass from 40Hz-50Hz downwards because nobody can hear it, it muds up Your whole sound and it steals Your poweramps power. Subsonics are amp & speaker killers.

Does a 4-string bass become obsolete after picking up a 5-string?

Nope, it has nothing to do with technology, even the oldes Bass Violas were tuned EAD or EADG, some even in fifths DCGE. With electrical instruments it has to do with technology but not of the bass but of the amps that couldn't transfer the low notes. An old bass amp e.g. Fender Bassman or old...

Does a 4-string bass become obsolete after picking up a 5-string?

Does anybody still have their first bass and amp?

My first bass amp (selfmade transistor amp 50 Watts) has gone up in fire when our rehearsal room burnt down in the 80's. But I still have my first two basses, a Sakai Shortscale and my all time favorite Ibanez 2365B Jazzy.

Who was the player(s) that made you want to play bass?

Being a guitarplayer for some time in 1972 I tried to get into a band. There were always at least 2-3 guitarplayers already in the band and they all didn't have a bass player. So after a lot of tries I decided to give bass a try, borrowed an old Hoefner Beatles Bass from a friend who recently...
