Cellist myself I opted to tune my bass in fifth to make full use of scores reading ability. You may consider to do so as well !.. must change strings and proceed to a few adjustments though... Happy to share my experience on this.

I play in fifth tuning a 29" short scale snap dragon bass which fits in my hand luggage as I am regularly travelling the globe for work. No way I would risk travelling with my 34" long scale bass. Fifth tuning delivers a warm C1 lower string. flatwound strings add a bit more tension for size...
