I used Fender 9050M stainless steel flatwounds and for roundwounds D'Addario XLs - yeah, the flats have a higher string tension naturally. The same flats are on my P-bass and they're great on it.

I have a 2005 4003 Ric - and it definitely needs adjusting more frequently than my Fenders. It plays nice, low action, but the neck on this bass is finicky. I like the sound of the Ric with flats; however, my bass doesn't handle the tension - it will bow until the truss rods are tight - tight...

I only know about my 2005 4003 Ric. What I don't like about it: It cannot handle flatwounds (and it defies any adjustment to try to compensate for the tension) - so, I have to string it up with tapewounds. It sounds great, but I'd rather have flats. I have the E-string, low output problem...

That's snobbery, indeed. I haven't read all of the thread, but I'm sure I'm not the first to mention that McCartney still plays his "crappy" Hofner... he hasn't achieved much.

I recently bought a Squier Affinity P/J bass after hearing good things about it. It plays and sounds great practicing at home, but when I brought it to band rehearsal, it revealed the quality of the pickups - they have to be replaced. The hardware, to my eyes, doesn't appear to be any...

Actually, it will fit without a problem - I've done it more than few times. OP, if you like the neck, do it.
