a friend just took her bass to acoustic outfitters (gary filgate) for the same thing. it had a wicked bend in it as we say up here. kelly

Double Bass Longer tailpiece wire for softer feel?

looks like it was closer to 1" move toward the bridge (from almost right on the saddle). do you think the changes then are more due to the synthetic tailpiece or willing it to feel/ sound better? i know that can happen too. i don't bow so i don't have wolf tones (at least that i notice). i'm...

Double Bass better tone tranferring bridge wood

i thinned my bride too much at the end (it was my first one) and it's maple... interesting topic. you should look at banjo players, many of them have tried all kinds of wood (why not, no fitting, swap-able, and cheap!). Ebony had a really dark muted sound on my banjo for example. i don't...

Double Bass Longer tailpiece wire for softer feel?

i had good success with moving the bridge up 1-2" and using nylon tailpiece "wire". my tailpiece was just about at the saddle, now it's 1-2" toward the bridge.

Double Bass Synthetic tailpiece cords.your experiencie...

i switched from braided wire to nylon from Bob Gollihur. it made a big difference, but i also moved the tailpiece toward the bridge almost an inch (the tailpiece was "hinged" close to the saddle). that could have been more difference than the material. this change was the second biggest...

Double Bass How do I work this adjustable bridge?

is there a standard or a preferred way? i added should in there because i wasn't sure. actually i just checked my bass w/ wooden adjusters and they're opposite... my old aluminum adjuster bridge (replaced w/ wood) and the one on my other bass are both threads up, the wood threads down.

Double Bass How do I work this adjustable bridge?

the bridge feet don't have to spin. there's a threaded insert in the top portion of the bridge, and a "bushing" in the bottom part (so the top part of the bridge will move away from the bottom part and the wheel will stay at the bottom). Clockwise should move the bridge taller, counter...

    Double Bass String Spacing Question

i moved my strings in because of this, not sure i noticed the volume difference; but it was easier to play, and i got less buzz on the E (probably from my attack). moved the A and E in (G and D were ok). A moved in ~3mm, and E moved in ~5mm.

Double Bass new bass, what to expect

Tim, thanks for your input. that story is scary!!! I'm married to a banjo player, so we've been A:B the bass w/ banjo all along. i suppose from your statement your carved never opened up? I did vow not to sell my hybrid bass regardless if a new one ever shows up. I need a festival bass...

    Double Bass String Spacing Question

1" apart maximum, but i play pizz. i think the closer the strings are to the center of the bridge, the more pressure is pushed straight down. the bridge is supposed to transfer force straight down, but if you can start in the middle, less force is exerted outward. bluegrass player disclaimer :)

Double Bass new bass, what to expect

the fingerboard and the carved top (at the f holes where i can measure) are both 1/4 inch, seems thin to me. it is definitely carved, i see the wood grain along the edge, and can see the ply difference in the back. the neck is pretty small too for it (it is also a 5/8 size, string length 40")...

Double Bass new bass, what to expect

Thanks folks, I did have someone else play it for me, as well as switch back and forth between the two (standing in the same place). Carved bass seems to have a deeper tone to it, like the note comes from inside, hybrid is more from the surface in your face. It's like the note in the...
