I've never seen anybody play a 5/4 measure, just to get the audience clapping on the backbeat, instead of the downbeat. I assume THAT’S why he kept flashing that mischievous smile at his band mates while he was playing. ;)

Is it ever desirable to “speed-up” a song to gain more intensity? Here’s the reason I ask: In Hilsong’s “You Are Holy”, the song starts out around 68bpm then progresses to around 76bpm - not imperceptible, in my mind. You can hear the kick drum heavily pushing the song when enters at the 2:40...

When I played for a living, our last band used both tracks and the drummer had a click in his ear. We just memorized the songs, so there was no need for a prompter to remind us of a song’s roadmap. In the small(er) churches in which I’ve served, we’ve always used wedges and never had the...
