    Ask a drummer

My father always used to say, "It's a poor craftsman (sic) who blames his (sic) tools."

    Ask a drummer

    > A sub-$200 used Gammon kit looks like a toy to me. Am I incorrect here? Why not go with used? I'm in the same situation myself, and it never occurred to me that since I'm not a drummer myself, that I'd want to spend the money on a new set......

    Lazy person's amp

Thanks, guys. ...all very helpful. One bass player I play with is electric, the other acoustic. Never do jazz vocals, except about every other year a singer friend is in town from L.A. Maybe versatility is the name of the game--why people become geerheads, I guess. You educated me on the...

    Lazy person's amp

Great idea. I guess in a rehearsal setting--particularly in a small-ish basement room--since the bass won't be directional, there's no reason not to double up with piano or vocal.... right? (Again, especially for jazz--nothing loud.....)

What difference does the drummer make? (We do mostly play as a trio, bu I plan to pick up an old drum set, too.)

    Lazy person's amp

Thanks. You got the idea--we're not crushin' any bones. :-) I think maybe Mr.Lenny1's thought of at least 300w. is a bit more than I'll need. :-) Very helpful thought about old, heavy stuff....

    Lazy person's amp

The idea of asking one of them to leave an old amp here absolutely makes sense. Thanks. My experience with musicians of all sorts is that there are geerheads and non-geerheads ('cept I've never met a non-geerhead guitar player :-) Both the people I play with regularly--perhaps...

    Lazy person's amp

So..... I enjoy this forum--even though I don't play bass. (I play tenor sax--mostly jazz.) I'm setting up a bare-bones rehearsal space in my basement. A piano player and I play occasionally with 3 different bass players. If I wanted to have a bass amp/speaker sitting around just in case one of...

Double Bass Jamkazam - Play with multiple musicians in real time in different locations.

    > If anyone comes in with a higher bitrate, > we can tell because random people get booted > out of the session, so we question visitors and > have them change down to 128 This is consistent with everything I've heard. So then why is JK charging everyone more to be able to play at higher bitrates?

Yeah, I can't claim to know much about the science, but I do know that JK has started charging for special features now. A cynical person might say that none of the different softwares out there really really controls most of the factors that contribute to latency, and that charging for...

Yeah, the ballad is a lost art. I love Dexter Gordon. Ever try Giant Steps at 120? Same thing. (Of course, I don't know what I'm doing on Giant Steps even at 120.... :-)

My bet is that you're pushing up against the laws of physics, and doing pretty well. Stick with Sentimental Mood and stay away from Cherokee. :-)

Just got this email from Jamkazam: Hello JamKazammers – A number of new users have asked if we are still here, and if the company and the service are still operational. The answer to all of these questions is yes. To be clear, we are necessarily working on JamKazam part-time at this point. We...

Haven't we always noticed that drummers and bass players who really groove stand/sit right next to each other?..... Is it this article or another I read that says that sophisticated musicians can feel even a 5 to 7ms latency--like 6 to 8 feet apart!
