Whale, thanks for the info. It does look like the s/n on the heel is 6 digits. The last digit appears to have been rubbed off. The p/u's are definitely 74. I posted more pictures earlier but here is the guitar itself.

I pulled the pickups and confirmed they were 74's. They stamps and the builders names dated it around 74. Let me know if you see something I missed.

No, these numbers are on the actual neck plate along with the F. I don't know if this is the original plate or not. I have a couple of 71 P basses that have the serial number on the plate as well as the date on the heel. The 74 (?) Has a stamp and a name on the neck. I can't find the pictures...

I have a P bass that appears to be a 74. There is no date on the neck plate only the name of the builder. On the neck plate are the numbers 62 938. Does anyone know what this means. I cannot find anything in Fender serial numbers or a google search.
